What does the future hold?

May 28, 2009

There are times in our lives where we reach a point where you need to make very important decisions. I’m in one of those moments. I’m planning to make career changes that will definitely change my life…but I’m afraid I might make the wrong decision. But whatever decision I make, wherever it may lead me, I know I’ll be able to make things turn out alright. I’m not a positive thinker and I’m not also a pessimist, I just believe in myself. That’s how I survived all these years.

So my students…pray that I will remain strong. And for you, another school year is starting. Keep trying. Goodluck!

Attention: MATH 29 STUDENTS

September 10, 2008

Welcome to my blog!

I have set-up this blog to be able to have a way of communicating with my students in a more different (or should i say, more modern) setting. Its a fast-paced world out there and if you can’t go with the flow, you’ll be left behind. So never cease learning new things and venture farther from the usual.

Ok, let’s get to the business at hand.

Our next set of topics will be on Integration Techniques (Methods of Integration). This part of our course wil constitute the core of our course, so its important that you should take time to study the lessons assigned. Many subjects will depend on your knowledge of these techniques.

To have an overview of the techniques that you will have to master, I have included the following link:

Is it me or the education system?

September 9, 2008

Since I started teaching I have had problems regarding my students exam results. I have tried everything in my capacity to improve their grades but still the results are the same everytime. I also faced difficulty in math since elementary which I was able to overcome, so i thought, my experience would help me be a better teacher. Now, after 8 years of teaching, i’m still asking the same questions and still searching for answers. What’s wrong with the way I’m handling my class? Why are my students still having  a hard time understanding in spite of all my efforts? Blah, blah, blah?

I have come to a realization that there is really not much I can do now, especially if they refuse to help themselves, deliberately.. The important things they needed to learn should have been mastered in elementary and high school where they spent yeeeeaaaarrrrrssss…learning mathematics. The sad thing is, most of them did not learn enough and for some, what they learned is wrong. A teacher of mine said that “it’s hard to unlearn what you have already learned.” Teaching them for 4 months compared to years of elementary and high school can’t even make a dent in their minds. Its like trying to turn a boulder to a different direction.

Am I capable of doing that…well I can try.

MATH IS HARD

September 6, 2008

Why is math such a difficult subject for most students? I believe its because mathematics is like a foreign language.

Difficulty comes from not understanding.

I had had difficulty in math since I was young but due to the need to know and master the subject, I was able to learn. Understanding math requires CDC (Courage, Determination, Commitment). You need to be ready to face difficulties, persevere and be self-motivated.

Learning math is like building a relationship. You need to know the basic things (yet important) about math. Always spend time on math. Remember important details. You have to make time. And if ever you come to the point of giving up…try again. If you just can’t continue further…seek help.

Math is a wonderful experience…don’t let your fear blind you of its beauty.
